Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Inspection and Replacement
(every 48,000 km [30,000 miles] or 24 months)
PROCEDURE
1. The PCV system vents crankcase gases through a special valve and hose back into the intake manifold, from where they enter the combustion chambers and are burned during normal engine operation. The system consists of a hose running from the cylinder head cover to the intake manifold and a fresh air supply hose routed between the air cleaner and the timing belt cover.
2. The PCV valve, with its hose attached, is installed in the cylinder head cover.

3. With the engine idling and warmed up to normal operating temperature, pull the valve and remove it together with the attached hose from the cylinder head cover.

4. Place your finger over the opening in the PCV valve or hose. You should feel vacuum. If not, check that the hose, the intake manifold fitting and the valve itself are not clogged. Replace any defective components.
5. Turn off the engine and shake the PCV valve. It should rattle slightly. If not, replace it.
6. To replace the PCV valve, disconnect it from the vacuum hose, noting its installation direction.
7. When buying a new valve, make sure it matches your vehicle's engine. The best way is to compare the new valve directly with the old one.
8. Connect the replacement PCV valve to the vacuum hose, making sure the connection is secure.
9. Inspect the hoses and rubber grommets. Replace any defective components.
10. Seat the valve firmly in its original location. For more information on PCV system operation, refer to the Engine Management Section of this Manual.
