Brake Fluid Replacement

~1min read

(every 48,000 km [30,000 miles] or every 24 months)

Remember that brake fluid is a chemically aggressive substance and must be handled with care. Do not allow brake fluid to get into your eyes, on exposed skin, or on painted vehicle surfaces. In addition to being toxic, brake fluid is highly hygroscopic (i.e., it absorbs moisture from the air). Excessive moisture in the fluid leads to a dangerous reduction in brake system performance. Use only fresh brake fluid, and do not leave it for long periods in a container that is not tightly closed.

PROCEDURE

1. Brake fluid must be replaced regularly and strictly in accordance with the vehicle maintenance schedule. Prepare enough clean rags or paper towels in advance to collect spilled fluid. To protect adjacent painted body panels, cover the master cylinder with rags.
2. Prepare fresh brake fluid of the required type (refer to Specifications at the beginning of this Section).
3. Remove the cap from the master cylinder reservoir.
4. Using a hand pump, syringe, or rubber bulb, remove the fluid present in the reservoir.
5. Fill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid until the level reaches the bottom edge of the filler neck.
6. Watching the fluid level in the reservoir, bleed all four brake units in turn (refer to Brake System Section) until fresh fluid begins to flow from the bleeder valves.
7. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir again and adjust if necessary. The brake pedal must feel firm when depressed; a spongy pedal is not acceptable.

Never operate the vehicle unless you are completely certain that the brakes are working properly!
