Brake System Inspection

(every 12,000 km [7500 miles] or every 6 months)

Remember that dust generated during operation of the brake assemblies may contain asbestos, which is extremely harmful to human health. Never blow dust away with compressed air and never inhale it; wear a protective mask or respirator when servicing the components. Never use gasoline or petroleum-based solvents to clean brake system components. Use only approved cleaning agents or methyl alcohol!

For more detailed illustrations of the brake assemblies, refer to the Brake System chapter.

The condition of the brake system components should be evaluated, in addition to the regular inspections specified in the maintenance schedule, each time the wheels are removed or whenever signs of brake system malfunction appear.

The symptoms listed below may indicate a malfunction of the brake components:

a) The vehicle loses directional stability during braking (pulls to one side);
b) The brakes squeal or squeak during braking;
c) Brake pedal travel increases excessively;
d) Pulsation is felt when depressing the brake pedal;
e) Signs of brake fluid leakage are present (usually on the inner surface of the wheels and tires).

Loosen the wheel nuts. Raise the vehicle and place it on safety stands. Remove the wheels.
