Routine Maintenance Intervals
The maintenance intervals specified in this Section are designed for the vehicle owner to perform all required procedures. The intervals were determined on the assumption that the vehicle is operated on a daily basis. To keep the vehicle in peak condition at all times, some of the procedures may be performed more often at the owner's discretion. The authors of this Manual are confident that maximum performance from the engine and other vehicle components and systems can only be achieved if the owner takes proper care of the vehicle. Maintaining the vehicle's appearance is also important in case of resale.
When the vehicle is operated in very dusty areas, under severe city driving conditions (frequent short trips), or when towing a trailer frequently, the maintenance intervals should be reduced as much as possible.
Maintenance of a new vehicle must be performed at an authorized service center of the vehicle manufacturer's dealer network to avoid violating the factory warranty obligations.
Every 400 km (250 miles) or once a week (whichever comes first)
Check the engine oil level (see Section Checking Fluid Levels).

Check the condition of the suspension and steering linkage components, as well as the drive shaft CV joint boots (see Section Inspecting Suspension and Steering Components, Checking Drive Shaft Boots).
Check the condition of the exhaust system components (see Section Checking Exhaust System Components).
Every 48 000 km (30 000 miles) or every 24 months (whichever comes first)
In addition to the checks listed in the previous subsection:
On 4-cylinder models, replace the spark plugs (see Section Checking and Replacing Spark Plugs).

On V6 models, replace the spark plugs (see Section Checking and Replacing Spark Plugs).
Replace the timing belt and balance shaft drive belt (see Chapter Engine).
When the vehicle is operated under severe conditions, perform all procedures marked with an asterisk every 12 000 km (7500 miles) or every 6 months (whichever comes first).
Severe conditions include the following operating conditions:
- Very dusty areas;
- Towing a trailer;
- Prolonged engine idling/driving at low speeds;
- Low ambient temperatures (below 0°C) combined with short trips (less than 6 km [4 miles]).
When the vehicle is operated under any of the conditions listed below, the procedures marked with two asterisks must be performed every 25 000 km (15 000 miles):
Severe city driving at high ambient temperatures (above 32°C);
Driving in hilly or mountainous terrain.
When the vehicle is operated under all of the conditions listed above, the timing belt and balance shaft drive belt should be replaced every 96 000 km (60 000 miles).
