This chapter explains exterior cleaning of the Ford Mustang in detail. In addition to general tips for hand washing, it gives specific guidance for headlamps, chrome parts and graphic elements. The use of high-pressure cleaners is also covered. Proper care not only preserves the shine but can also increase resale value. Recommendations for paint protection with wax and caution with car washes underline the importance of regular, material-appropriate cleaning. The chapter combines practical tips with safety considerations, for a well-kept appearance in all weather.

Note: When vehicles go through a car wash with a wax cycle, make sure the wax is removed from the windshield and the wiper blades.

Note: Before using a car wash, check that it is suitable for your vehicle.

Note: Some car washes use high water pressure. For this reason, water droplets may enter the vehicle interior and possibly damage certain vehicle components.

Note: Remove the antenna before using an automatic car wash.

Note: The blower should be switched off in the car wash to prevent contamination of the fresh air filter.

We recommend washing the vehicle with a sponge and lukewarm water with vehicle shampoo.

Cleaning the Headlamps

Note: Do not use aggressive, alcohol-based or chemical solvents to clean the headlamp lenses.

Note: Never clean headlamps dry.

Cleaning the Rear Windows

Note: Do not use aggressive, abrasive or chemical solvents when cleaning the inside of the rear window.

Use a clean, lint-free cloth or a damp chamois to clean the inside of the rear window.

Cleaning Chrome Trim

Note: Do not use abrasive agents or chemical solvents.

Use soapy water.

Note: Never apply cleaning agents to hot surfaces, and never leave them on chrome surfaces longer than recommended.

Note: Sharp, aggressive cleaning agents and cleaning chemicals can damage the chrome layer over time.

Cleaning Stripes or Graphic Elements

Hand washing is preferred for the vehicle, but pressure washing may also be used under the following conditions:

  • Water pressure not above 14,000 kPa.
  • Water temperature not above 82 °C.
  • Use a wide-angle nozzle with a 40° spray angle.
  • Nozzle distance of 305 mm and an angle of 90° to the vehicle surface.

Note: If the pressure spray nozzle is held at an angle to the vehicle surface, graphic elements may be damaged and edges may lift from the vehicle surface.

Paint Protection

We recommend treating the vehicle paint once or twice a year with polish or wax.

Note: Do not polish the vehicle in strong sunlight.

Note: When polishing, make sure no polish gets onto plastic parts, as stains may be difficult to remove.

Note: Never treat the windshield or rear window with polishing agents.

This can cause the wipers to squeak and reduce their effectiveness.
