Pedestrian Protection
The pedestrian protection system in the Ford Mustang (VI Gen) is a technical highlight for greater safety in road traffic. In a collision, the hood rises automatically to cushion the impact for the pedestrian. This chapter explains the components of the system – from hood lifters through sensors to warning labels – and describes the sequence of events in the event of deployment. Service may only be performed by qualified technicians to ensure full protective effect. Another example of the Mustang's well-considered safety philosophy.
Function Description
WARNINGS
Never drive the vehicle if the hood has deployed.
Do not place your hand or other objects or mounting materials on or near the hood lifters. Failure to observe this instruction may result in serious injury in the event of deployment.
Do not attempt to service, repair or modify the hood lifters, as you could suffer serious or fatal injury. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Do not attempt to service, repair or modify the hood hinges, as you may damage the deployable hood system.
Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Once the deployable hood system has deployed, the system will not work again. The deployable hood system, including the hood, hinges, hood lifters, bumper system and crash sensors, must be inspected and serviced by an authorized dealer.
Do not modify or add attachments to the front of the vehicle (including the hood, bumper system, frame, front body structure, tow hooks and hood safety pins). Doing so can impair the performance of the deployable hood system and increase the risk of injury. Do not modify the front of the vehicle or install any equipment there.
Your vehicle is equipped with an advanced pedestrian protection system.
The bumper contains energy-absorbing material in its structure, as well as sensors that detect a pedestrian impact and activate the deployable hood system.
Deployable hood system

The system releases the hood hinges and raises the rear edge of the hood by approx. 100 mm. This increases the distance between the hood and the components in the engine compartment, providing additional cushioning when a pedestrian contacts the hood.
The deployable hood system consists of:
- Hood
- Hood hinges.
- Hood lifters near the hood hinges.
- Crash sensors and monitoring system with standby indicator. See Crash sensors and Airbag indicator.
- Warning labels for the deployable hood system under the hood near the hood lifters, showing service and emergency personnel where they are located.

These labels show the position of the hood lifters for service and emergency personnel.
The deployable hood system is active only when the ignition is switched on and the vehicle is driven at speeds of approx. 20 km/h to 50 km/h.
After deployment
After an impact in which the deployable hood system was activated, the hood remains raised and permanently attached to the vehicle via the hood hinges and the strap.
Never drive the vehicle if the hood has deployed. If the deployable hood system has been activated, stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible and have it transported to the nearest authorized dealer.
If the standby indicator comes on and stays on, have the vehicle transported to the nearest authorized dealer.
After the deployable hood system has been triggered, the hood can be opened using the hood latch. Make sure the hood is securely closed and latched before having the vehicle transported to the nearest authorized dealer.
Deployable hood monitoring system
A routine warning from the deployable hood system is not required.
If the system detects a fault, the monitoring system turns on the standby indicator in the instrument cluster.
If the standby indicator is illuminated, proceed as follows:
Never attempt to repair or service the system yourself. Take your vehicle to an authorized dealer immediately.
If the deployable hood system has been activated, we recommend replacing the following parts:
- Hood
- Hood hinges
- Hood lifters
Have an authorized dealer inspect the following components and replace them if necessary:
- Crash sensors
- Bumper and energy-absorbing material
Disposal of the hood lifters
Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible. The hood lifters may only be disposed of by qualified personnel.
Pedestrian protection on the Ford Mustang (VI Gen, 2014–2023) demonstrates a commitment to safety beyond the occupants. The deployable hood system protects pedestrians in the event of an impact and complements the vehicle's innovative driver assistance systems.
By using sensors and energy-absorbing materials, the risk of injury is reduced. The Ford Mustang 2014–2023 combines sporty styling with modern responsibility on the road.
This safety concept makes the Ford Mustang (VI Gen, 2014–2023) a benchmark for comprehensive protection and innovative engineering.
