Instrument cluster. Warning lights and displays. Audible warnings and messages
The chapter on warning lights and audible signals in the Ford Mustang (VI Gen, 2014–2023) provides an essential overview of all safety-related indicators in the cockpit. From ABS to tire pressure to the malfunction indicator lamp, each function is explained with its symbol, cause and recommended action. Audible warning systems such as the headlamp reminder chime and the parking brake warning chime are also covered. This information is essential for recognizing potential problems early and ensuring safe operation in all driving conditions.
Warning lights and displays
The following warning lights and indicators alert you when a vehicle condition becomes hazardous. Some lights illuminate during the function check when the vehicle is started. If a light does not go out after the vehicle has started, refer to the information on the system that the warning light relates to.
Note: Some warning symbols appear in the information display and function like a warning light, but do not illuminate when the vehicle is started.
Anti-lock Braking System
If it illuminates while driving, there is a malfunction. The brakes work conventionally (without ABS), unless the brake system warning light is also illuminated. Have the system checked by your authorized dealer.
Battery
If it illuminates while driving, this indicates a malfunction. Switch off any electrical loads that are not needed, and have the system checked by your authorized dealer immediately.
Hood Open
Illuminates when the ignition is switched on and the hood is not fully closed.
Trunk Open
Illuminates when the ignition is switched on and the trunk is not fully closed.
Brake System
Illuminates when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switched on.
If it flashes while driving, make sure the parking brake is not applied. If the parking brake is released, this indicates a low brake fluid level or a malfunction in the brake system. Have the system checked by your authorized dealer immediately.
WARNING
It is dangerous to drive the vehicle with the warning light illuminated. A significant reduction in braking performance may result. Stopping the vehicle may take longer. Have your vehicle checked by your authorized dealer immediately.
Driving with the parking brake applied over a long distance may cause brake damage and, as a result, accidents.
Cruise Control
Illuminates when you switch on this function.
Turn Signal Indicator
Illuminates when the left or right turn signal or the hazard warning flasher is operated. If these indicators do not go out or flash faster, check for a burned-out bulb. See Replacing Bulbs.
Door Ajar
Appears when the ignition is switched on and one of the doors is not fully closed.
Engine Coolant Temperature
Illuminates when the engine coolant temperature is significantly too high. Stop the vehicle as soon as possible, switch off the engine and allow it to cool down. See Checking the Coolant.
Engine oil
If it illuminates while the engine is running or while driving, there is a malfunction. Stop the vehicle as soon as traffic permits and switch off the engine. Check the engine oil level. See Checking the Engine Oil.
Note: Do not continue driving if the warning light remains illuminated despite the correct fluid level. Have the system checked by your authorized dealer immediately.
Fasten Seat Belt
It illuminates and a warning tone sounds to remind you to fasten your seat belt.
See Seat Belt Reminder.
Front Airbag
If it does not illuminate when the vehicle is started, flashes continuously or stays on, this indicates a malfunction. Have the system checked by your authorized dealer.
Fog Lights
Illuminates when the front fog lamps are switched on.
High Beam Indicator
It illuminates when the high beams are switched on. The indicator flashes when the headlamp flasher is operated.
Low Beam Malfunction
Illuminates when the low beam bulb is defective.
Low Fuel Level
Illuminates when the fuel level is low or the fuel tank is nearly empty.
Refuel as soon as possible.
Tire Pressure Warning – Low Tire Pressure
Illuminates when tire pressure is low. If the
light remains on while the engine is running or while driving, check the tire pressure as soon as possible.
Also illuminates briefly when the ignition is switched on to confirm that the light is functioning. If it does not illuminate when the ignition is switched on, or if it begins to flash at any time, have the system checked by your authorized dealer immediately.
Parking Lamps
Illuminates when the parking lamps are switched on.
Rear Fog Lamp Indicator
Illuminates when the rear fog lamps are switched on.
Service Engine Soon
If the Service Engine Soon indicator illuminates after you start the engine, it indicates that the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system has detected a malfunction in the
vehicle emission control system. See On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) in the Fuel and Refueling chapter for more information on maintaining your vehicle.
If the light flashes, an engine misfire is occurring that may damage your catalytic converter. Drive moderately (avoid hard acceleration and heavy braking) and have your vehicle serviced immediately.
WARNING
If engine misfires occur, very high exhaust temperatures can damage the catalytic converter, fuel system, underbody heat shields or other vehicle components and cause a fire. Have your vehicle serviced by an authorized dealer immediately.
The Service Engine Soon indicator illuminates when you switch the ignition on before starting the engine for the first time, to check the bulb and show whether the vehicle is ready for inspection and maintenance (I/M).
Normally, the Engine Service Due Soon indicator stays on until the engine runs, and it turns off automatically if no faults are present. However, if the Engine Service Due Soon indicator flashes eight times after 15 seconds, the vehicle is not ready for Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Stability Control
Flashes when the system is active. If it stays on continuously or does not come on when the ignition is switched on, there is a malfunction. When there is a malfunction, the system turns off. Have the system checked by your dealer immediately. See Using Stability Control.
Stability Control Off
Comes on when the system is turned off. It turns off when you turn the system back on or switch off the ignition. See Using Stability Control.
Audible Warnings and Messages
Keyless Operation Warning
The horn sounds twice when you leave the vehicle with the Intelligent Access key and the keyless entry and start system is still on, meaning the vehicle is still in operation. The horn also sounds twice when you leave the vehicle and try to lock the doors manually while the Intelligent Access key is still inside the vehicle. The doors will not lock while the Intelligent Access key is inside the vehicle.
Headlamp Warning Chime
Sounds when you remove the key from the vehicle while the headlamps or parking lamps are left on.
Parking Brake Warning Chime
Sounds when you drive with the parking brake applied. If the warning chime continues after you release the parking brake, have the system checked by your dealer immediately.
The warning and indicator lights of the Ford Mustang (6th Generation, 2014–2023) give the driver clear information about the current vehicle status.
