Coolant warning lamp
If the coolant warning lamp starts flashing while driving, stop the vehicle immediately.
PROCEDURE
Check the coolant level (refer to Cooling System) and add coolant or water if necessary.
If the engine is hot and the coolant level is correct, check whether the electric cooling fan runs with the ignition switched on. If it does not run although the engine is overheated, refer to the cooling fan troubleshooting table (refer to Cooling System).
Last possibility: one of the two sensors of this lamp is faulty (refer to the next section).
Coolant warning lamp troubleshooting
PROCEDURE
Checking the lamp: when the ignition is switched on, the coolant warning lamp flashes as a function check. If this does not happen:
Check the corresponding fuse (refer to Body Electrical System).
If the fuse is good, remove the instrument cluster, then remove and check the lamp.
If the lamp is good, check the wiring or replace the mini-system unit.
Checking the temperature sensor in the engine block: if the lamp flashes even when the engine is cold or at normal operating temperature (running), the temperature sensor may be faulty.
Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the temperature sensor: the lamp should go out.
Ground the wire to the coolant warning lamp: the lamp should flash again.
If this happens in both cases, the lamp is good; the cause is therefore in the sensor or the wiring, or in the coolant level sensor.
Checking the coolant level sensor in the expansion tank:
The sensor is mounted at the bottom of the expansion tank and is rigidly connected to it.
If the lamp flashes although the fluid level is correct, disconnect the wire from the sensor.
If the flashing then stops, clean the sensor inside the tank or replace the tank.
