Voltage stabilizer

The voltage stabilizer (arrow) is installed on the side of the small heat sink on the back of the instrument cluster.

A small box, the voltage stabilizer, is bolted to the back of the instrument cluster with three bolts. Its function is to supply the temperature and fuel gauges with fully regulated voltage. Otherwise, voltage fluctuations would cause the gauge needles to fluctuate.

If both gauges behave erratically or show nothing at all, the stabilizer is most likely the cause.

Checking the voltage stabilizer
PROCEDURE

Remove the instrument cluster, then reconnect the wire.

Switch on the ignition.

Connect a voltmeter between the center and left terminals of the stabilizer (viewed from the back of the instrument cluster).

The voltmeter should read 9.75–10.25 V.

If the voltage is outside these limits, the voltage stabilizer is faulty. If there is no voltage at all, check the power supply.

To do this, connect a voltmeter between the center and right terminals of the stabilizer. If it does not show battery voltage, look for a break in the wiring.
