Speedometer
Previously, speedometers were driven by a flexible cable, the speedometer cable. The Audi 80 is different: its speedometer is an electronic measuring instrument, similar to the tachometer. Like the tachometer, it receives rotational speed pulses, but not from the engine; they come from a sensor in the transmission, which measures the wheel rotational speed. The instrument compares the speed pulses with a time base and thus obtains a reference value for vehicle speed.
Because there is no mechanical drive, the odometer operates partly electrically: a so-called stepper motor turns the odometer drive shaft step by step, depending on the number of speed pulses.
Advantages of the electronic speedometer: quiet operation and more accurate readings.
If the speedometer does not work, first check the corresponding fuse in the fuse box.
