To adjust the fuel gauge, remove the black plug (black arrow) next to the trip reset button with small pliers. The gauge can now be adjusted by turning the adjusting screw (white arrow) with a hex socket wrench.

The fuel level is shown on the instrument panel. The fuel gauge is essentially a voltmeter, to which the full voltage is supplied when the ignition is switched on. To keep the voltage constant, a voltage stabilizer is connected in the circuit, which we will discuss later.

The fuel gauge needle movement is controlled by a ground contact. This is provided by the fuel level sender, whose resistance changes higher or lower depending on the fuel level in the tank. Removal of the fuel gauge sender is described in the Fuel Tank and Fuel Pump chapter.

Malfunctions
Reading too high or too low: voltage stabilizer faulty (for removal, see the beginning of this chapter, section "Disassembly"), or fuel level gauge incorrectly adjusted (see next section).

No reading: voltage stabilizer faulty, or fuel tank sender, or gauge faulty.

Adjusting the fuel level gauge
PROCEDURE

Empty the fuel tank completely.

Pour exactly 4 L of fuel into the tank.

Switch the ignition on and wait 2 min.

The gauge needle should now be at the first large division of the red reserve field.

If this is not the case, the gauge can be adjusted with the small adjusting screw at the lower left of the instrument.

To do this, remove the black plug next to the trip odometer reset button using small pliers, and turn the adjusting screw with an Allen key.

Checking the fuel level sender
PROCEDURE

Fold back the luggage compartment trim, unscrew the black cover and disconnect the multi-pin connector underneath it.

Connect an auxiliary wire to the connector terminal of the violet-black wire and ground it.

Switch the ignition on briefly: if the gauge needle deflects fully, the wiring and the gauge are in order. If the needle does not move, the sender in the fuel tank is faulty.

If the needle remains at the "empty" position, the cause lies in the wiring, the voltage stabilizer or the instrument. The sender is most likely in order in this case.
