Switch Checks
PROCEDURE
You can pierce the cable insulation with a test lamp with a needle contact to determine which cables are live.
Select the wiring diagram corresponding to the switch in question.
First check whether the switches are powered; to do this, turn the ignition or lights on and off several times.
Then check whether the switch passes voltage further along the circuit in the corresponding position.
Using the ignition switch as an example, the check is performed as follows:
Remove the instrument cluster to gain access to the wires.
Connect the test lamp wire to ground.
Pierce the insulation of the wire being tested with the test probe.
Both thick red wires at terminal 30 must be permanently live from the battery.
The gray-yellow P-circuit terminal is live in the ignition switch "rest position"; power is cut off when the key is turned.
The black-yellow wire at terminal X is live only in the "ignition on" position, as is the thin red wire to the parking light buzzer and radio.
The black wire at terminal 15 is live in the "ignition on" and "start" positions.
The red-black wire at terminal 50, the engine starter command, is live only in the "start" position.
