Self-diagnostic system

Pictograms After the ignition key is turned to position 2, the following warnings are shown on the display (until the cause is eliminated):

1 Check low beam headlights
2 Refill washer fluid, goes out after approx. 1 minute
3 Door open
4 Rear lid open
5 Check tail lights and brake lights.

If the center brake light malfunctions, the upper symbol illuminates. If you switch off the ignition without switching off the headlights, an audible signal will remind you when you open the driver's door.

Alphanumeric display Text instructions and warnings are shown when the ignition key is in position 2. An audible signal may sound at the same time.

3 "CHECK" button Messages are divided into 2 priority levels:

1 These instructions or fault messages are accompanied by an audible signal and flashing symbols

1. If several malfunctions occur at the same time, the messages are displayed one after another. The messages do not disappear until the faults are rectified. You cannot clear them yourself with the "CHECK" button (3).

► "FASTEN SEAT BELTS-" The symbol for an unfastened seat belt also lights up and warning tones sound.

► "RELEASE PARKINGBRAKE" (Release the parking brake)

► "COOLANT TEMPERATURE" (Coolant temperature too high) Stop the vehicle and switch off the engine.

► "STOP- ENGINE OILPRESS" (Engine oil pressure low) Stop the vehicle and switch off the engine.

► "CHECK BRAKE FLUID" (Check brake fluid) The level has almost reached the minimum mark. Top up the fluid at the earliest opportunity.

Have the cause of the fluid leak rectified at a BMW service center.

► "DSC/4x4 INACTIVE" The DSC and/or xDrive system has failed. The stabilizing effect of DSC and/or xDrive is not available. Torque may be transmitted only to the rear wheels. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible. For further information, see page 97.

► "SELFLEVEL SUSP.INACT" (Ride height adjustment not available) Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "SELFLEVEL SUSP.INACT" (Ride height adjustment not available) "MAX. 60 km/h" These messages appear one after another. Do not exceed a speed of 60 km/h. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "TRAILER MODE" (Trailer) This message appears for 3 seconds when an attempt is made to change the ride height while driving with a trailer.

► "FUEL INJECT.SYSTEM" (Fuel injection system) Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "TRANSMISS'N OVERHEAT" (Transmission overheating) Reduce speed, stop at a suitable location and allow the transmission to cool. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "SPEED LIMIT" (Speed limit) This message appears if you exceed the speed limit permitted in your country or the speed you have set.

Priority 2 These instructions or fault messages are displayed for 20 seconds when the ignition key is turned to the position

2. The symbols accompanying the message then remain on the display.

Press the "CHECK" button to display the messages again:

► "BOOTLID OPEN" (Trunk lid open) This message appears only when the vehicle first starts moving.

► "DOOR OPEN" (Door open) This message appears when the vehicle reaches a certain speed.

► "PRE-HEATING" (Preheating) The engine may only be started after this message goes out.

► "WASHER FLUID LOW" (Washer fluid level low) Top up the fluid at the earliest opportunity.

► "CHECK ENGINE OIL LEV" (Check engine oil level) Engine oil level is at zero. Top up the engine oil within 50 km.

► "CHECK BRAKE LIGHTS" (Check brake lights) A bulb has failed, see page 166, or there is a fault in the wiring.

Have the vehicle inspected by a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "CHECK LOWBEAM LIGHTS" (Check low beam lights) "CHECK PARK LIGHTS" (Check parking lights) "CHECK TAIL LIGHTS" (Check tail lights) "CHECK FRONT FOGLAMPS" (Check front fog lamps) "CHECK REAR FOGLIGHTS" (Check rear fog lights) "CHECK NUMPLATE LIGHT" (Check license plate light) "CHECK TRAILER LIGHTS" (Check trailer lights) "CHECK HIGHBEAM LIGHT" (Check high beam light) "CHECK REVERSE LIGHTS" (Check reverse lights) A bulb may have failed or there is a fault in the wiring. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "TRANS.FAILSAFE PROG" (Transmission fail-safe program) For more information, see page 65. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

► "CHECK BRAKE LININGS" (Check brake linings) Have the brake pads checked at a BMW service center.

► "CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" (Check coolant level) Level is low. Top up the coolant at the earliest opportunity.

► "ENGINE FAILSAFE PROG" (Engine fail-safe program) Fault in the engine management system. The vehicle can continue to be driven, but with reduced engine power or engine speed. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.

The following message appears only once:

► "OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE –5.0 6" (Outside temperature –5.0 6) The actual value is displayed at outside temperatures of +36 and below.
