Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Airbags

The following airbags are concealed under these covers:

1 Front airbags for driver and front passenger 2 Front and rear head airbags 3 Front and rear side airbags

Protective effect: Front airbags protect the driver and front passenger in a frontal collision when the seat belts alone would not be sufficient. Head and side airbags provide protection in a side collision. The side airbag protects the chest area from the side. The head airbag protects the head.

Airbags do not deploy in every collision, which is intentional. For example, they do not deploy in minor accidents, sometimes in rollovers, and in rear impacts.

Do not cover, wrap or otherwise alter the airbag covers in any way.

Do not attempt to remove the airbag system yourself. Never make any changes to the system wiring or its individual components. This also applies to the impact-safe trim of the steering wheel, instrument panel, side trim, doors, roof side rails and headliner edges.

Removing the steering wheel yourself is also prohibited.

Do not touch individual system components immediately after the airbags have deployed.

There is a risk of burns. Have the airbags checked, repaired, removed and disabled, and their inflators disposed of, only by a BMW Service center. Improper handling may cause the system to malfunction or deploy unintentionally, which may result in injury.

Airbag System Readiness

After turning the ignition key to position 1, the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster signals that the airbag system and seat belt tensioners are ready. After a few seconds the lamp goes out.

Airbag System Malfunction

If a malfunction occurs in the airbag system, have it checked immediately at a BMW Service center, because a faulty system may not deploy in an accident.

The airbag system is faulty if one of the following signs occurs:

► Indicator lamp does not light when the ignition key is turned to position 1; ► Indicator lamp stays on continuously;
► Indicator lamp lights up while driving.
