The Emergency Cooling system in the Ford Mustang (VI Gen) protects the engine in the event of coolant loss. It describes cylinder deactivation operation, reduced engine power, and warning indicators. The action steps for overheating and the limits of emergency operation are especially important. Drivers are warned to use this system only in an emergency. It is a technical safety net that buys time, but it is not a substitute for repair.

If coolant is lost, Emergency Cooling allows temporary driving before components are damaged. The fail-safe driving distance depends on the outside temperature, the payload, and the terrain conditions.

How Emergency Cooling Works

When the engine begins to overheat, the coolant temperature gauge pointer moves into the red zone (hot), and:

the

the coolant temperature warning light comes on.

the message "Engine Service Soon" appears.

When the engine reaches a preset overtemperature, the engine automatically switches to cylinder deactivation operation.

Each deactivated cylinder acts as an air pump and cools the engine.

The vehicle remains operable in this case. However, note the following:

  • Engine power is limited.
  • This deactivates the air conditioning.

Continued operation increases engine temperature, which will cause the engine to shut off completely. In this case, higher steering and braking forces are required.

When the engine temperature drops, the engine can be restarted.

Take your vehicle to an authorized dealer as soon as possible to minimize engine damage.

When Emergency Cooling Mode Is Activated

WARNINGS

Emergency Cooling Mode is intended for emergencies only. Drive your vehicle in Emergency Cooling Mode only until you can park it in a safe place, and have it repaired immediately. When Emergency Cooling Mode is active, your vehicle's performance is limited. High-speed driving is not possible, and the engine may shut off completely without warning, which causes loss of engine power, power steering assist, and brake booster assist and can increase the risk of accidents and injury.

Never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot.

In Emergency Cooling Mode, engine power is limited, so drive carefully. High-speed driving is not possible, and the engine runs unevenly.

Note that the engine may shut off automatically to prevent engine damage. In this case:

  1. Leave the road as quickly as safely possible and switch off the engine.
  2. Tow the vehicle to an authorized dealer.
  3. If this is not possible, wait a short time to allow the engine to cool.
  4. Check the coolant level and top up coolant if necessary.
  5. Restart the engine and drive to an authorized dealer.

Note: Continuing to drive without repair increases the likelihood of engine damage. Contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Temperature Management for Engine Fluids (if equipped)

WARNINGS

To avoid accidents and injury, be prepared for reduced driving speed and possibly limited acceleration until fluid temperatures have dropped.

Never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot.

The vehicle allows trailer operation; however, under severe operating conditions, such as the following, the engine may reach higher temperatures due to the additional load:

Long or steep uphill driving while towing a trailer at high temperatures.

In this case, the engine coolant temperature gauge pointer may move into the H range, and the information display may show the message POWER REDUCED TO LOWER TEMPERATURE.

Reduced engine power may cause a noticeable reduction in driving speed. To regulate engine fluid temperatures, the vehicle may switch to this operating mode in certain high-temperature, high-load situations. The degree of speed reduction depends on many factors, including vehicle load, trailer operation, gradient, and ambient temperature. In this case, you do not need to leave the road. You can continue driving while this message is active.

Under severe operating conditions, the air conditioning may switch on and off to protect the engine from overheating. Once the engine coolant temperature returns to normal operating temperature, the air conditioning switches back on.

If the coolant temperature gauge needle moves into the red zone (hot), or the Coolant Temperature warning or Engine Service Soon warning appears in the information display:

  1. Leave the road as soon as it is safe to do so and shift the transmission into P.
  2. Let the engine run until the coolant temperature gauge needle moves out of the red zone (hot).
If the temperature does not drop after a few minutes, follow the next steps.
  • Switch off the engine and wait until it has cooled down. Only then check the coolant level.
  • If the coolant level is normal, restart the engine and continue driving.
  • If the coolant level is low, add coolant and restart the engine. For more information, see Adding Engine Coolant or Limp Home Cooling Mode Operation in this chapter.
  • The limp home cooling system of the Ford Mustang (6th Gen, 2014–2023) protects the engine from overheating when the coolant level is insufficient. It allows limited driving so that the vehicle can be parked safely or taken to the nearest workshop.

The notices on reduced engine power and on seeking a workshop immediately to prevent engine damage are particularly important. The Ford Mustang 6th Generation thus reflects its engineering maturity and high safety standards.

This system underlines the Ford Mustang (6th Gen, 2014–2023) commitment to maximum safety and functionality, even in emergency situations.
