Tire Grip on the Road Surface

~1min read

Regularly check tire air pressure and tread wear (tread depth). Both of these factors are extremely important for good tire grip on the road surface and for preventing hydroplaning, that is, a sharp loss of grip when driving into puddles. For better vehicle handling and safety when winter arrives, use studded tires.

While driving, constantly monitor changes in road conditions, which are often very unstable. Wet leaves on the road can be more dangerous than ice. A road surface that looks clean and dry may still be icy in places. Particularly dangerous conditions develop at air temperatures around 0°C, when puddles may alternate with ice, making the vehicle's behavior especially unpredictable.

Be careful when shifting an automatic transmission into a lower range. On slippery surfaces, abruptly engaging a low gear may cause the driven wheels to spin briefly and the vehicle to skid.

Special caution and attention are required from the driver when overtaking. Equal attention should be paid when other vehicles overtake yours. Water and dirt spray from the wheels of an overtaking truck can significantly reduce visibility through the windshield. A gust of crosswind while overtaking a truck or bus is dangerous and may cause loss of vehicle control.
