Five-Speed Manual Transmission

~2min read

When driving on a slippery road surface, aggressive engine braking or excessively abrupt acceleration may cause loss of vehicle control and an accident, which may result in serious injury to the occupants. Exercise particular caution when driving on road surfaces that do not provide adequate traction for the vehicle's wheels.

All forward gears are synchronized to ensure smooth and jerk-free shifting. The transmission has a blocking device that prevents direct shifting from fifth gear into reverse.

When shifting the transmission up (to higher gears) or down (to lower gears), fully depress the clutch pedal. After moving the shift lever to the next gear position, release the clutch pedal smoothly. While driving in the selected gear, fully release the clutch pedal to prevent premature wear of the clutch mechanism components.

Engage reverse gear only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Attempting to engage reverse while the vehicle is moving may cause serious damage to the transmission. Before engaging reverse, fully depress the clutch and wait a short pause (a few seconds). Note: Instead of pausing, you may briefly engage one of the forward gears. The reverse engagement methods described above prevent harsh reverse engagement caused by residual gear rotation.

To slow the vehicle, you may use engine braking by shifting the transmission into one of the lower gears. Engine braking helps control vehicle speed at a safe level and prevents overheating of the brake system when driving down long, steep grades. Downshift progressively as the vehicle slows, so as not to exceed the maximum permissible engine speed shown on the tachometer. The tachometer needle must not enter the red zone of the scale. In all cases, refer to the maximum permissible vehicle speeds for the respective gears (see below).
