Parking the Vehicle

~1min read

Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle parked. Note that the parking brake indicator lamp on the instrument panel is only a reminder to the driver to release the parking brake before driving. The lamp being on does not guarantee that the parking brake is fully applied. To prevent the vehicle from rolling on a slope, make sure the parking brake is properly applied.

First apply the parking brake, then move the automatic transmission shift lever to "P". This sequence prevents accidental vehicle movement and avoids transferring significant load from the rolling vehicle to the transmission secondary shaft lock mechanism. Unloading the secondary shaft lock coupling from the vehicle's rolling force ensures that the lever can be easily moved out of "P" when the vehicle is next driven.

When parking on a grade, turn the front wheels away from the curb, and vice versa.

Before driving, make sure the parking brake is fully released. Driving with the parking brake not fully released may cause the rear brake assemblies to overheat and fail. It may also cause the ABS to malfunction.

Recommendations for Safe Parking
Make sure the sunroof and all windows are closed.

Turn off all lights.

Place luggage and valuables in lockable compartments or take them with you.

Lock the doors with the key or the remote keyless entry transmitter.

On models equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure the system indicator on the instrument panel lights up, which indicates that the device is activated.

Never leave the vehicle with the engine running on surfaces covered with dry leaves, tall grass, or other flammable materials. Remember that the catalytic converter housing can become extremely hot, creating a fire hazard.
