Ordering Parts
Using high-quality spare parts and consumables specifically intended for the particular vehicle model plays an important role in repair work.
In general, available spare parts can be divided into two main groups:
Genuine parts. These parts are distributed through the official dealerships of the vehicle manufacturers and always come in original packaging with the appropriate markings. The quality of the part is guaranteed by the vehicle manufacturer itself. Manufacturer dealership service centers can order any parts produced for the models on sale. If a part is not in stock at the time of the visit, it can be delivered in a short time from the central warehouse.
Non-genuine parts. The term “non-genuine” does not indicate the quality of the part. It only means that the part is not sold in the packaging of the vehicle manufacturer and is not distributed through the manufacturer’s official dealerships. The main sources of this group are well-known parts manufacturers that supply parts to the assembly lines of sometimes several vehicle plants at once. Due to their high production capacity, such companies also supply parts for sale on the open market. These parts come in the packaging and with the markings of the parts manufacturer, are in no way inferior in quality to genuine parts, and cost noticeably less (the price difference can reach 50%). However, the range is usually more limited, since for open sale manufacturers generally produce only the most common parts in greatest demand.
Many large Western parts retailers use their own packaging, purchasing a wide range of non-genuine parts in large batches directly from manufacturers and selling them under their own brand.
Non-genuine parts are usually distributed through independent automotive accessory stores, auto repair shops, and service stations.
Special attention should be paid to the quality of the parts being purchased. Try to avoid buying very cheap parts (compared with genuine and non-genuine parts from well-known manufacturers), since they often do not meet quality and safety standards. If installing a low-grade decorative trim strip can only affect the appearance of the vehicle, the use of low-quality brake pads or an oil filter threatens passenger safety or can cause serious engine damage. Restoration repair costs can often be many times greater than the amount saved by buying a cheap part. This means that you should try to use the services of official dealerships of the vehicle manufacturer (genuine parts), or well-established suppliers of non-genuine parts.
It is also possible to purchase remanufactured parts, in which case the old, failed part is usually surrendered in exchange for a remanufactured one. This approach is most effective when replacing complex, expensive components such as powertrain assemblies, the alternator, the starter, etc. This service is provided both by the vehicle manufacturer’s official service centers and by independent parts suppliers, and it allows repair costs to be significantly reduced. The company offering the remanufactured unit usually provides almost the same warranty as for a new one.
