Additional Seat Belt Information

Three-Point Seat Belt

The routing and anchorage method of the three-point (diagonal-lap) seat belt is shown in the illustration.

To unbuckle the belt, press the red button marked PRESS located on the buckle housing. When the belt is retracted by the retractor drum, hold it by the buckle tongue. After exiting the vehicle, make sure the belt is not caught in the door opening and is not trapped when the door is closed.

Three-point (diagonal-lap) belts are equipped with an inertia-type retractor. The retractor drum automatically takes up slack in the belt webbing and maintains a slight preliminary tension on the belt pressed against the body. Inertia-type belts practically do not restrict the movement of the occupant and allow them to easily change position on the seat. In a traffic accident or sudden braking, the retractor automatically locks the seat belt, securing the body against dangerous movement.

On the seat belts of these vehicle models, the three-point (diagonal-lap) belts at all seats except the front seats are equipped with additional locking devices that allow secure installation of child restraint seats. For more detailed information on this subject, contact an authorized Honda service station.

When the shoulder portion of the belt is pulled out sharply, the locking mechanism of the retractor is activated. The drum locks the belt, preventing dangerous movement of the passenger.

Automatic Emergency Belt Tensioners

On some models, to provide additional protection for the driver/passenger, the front seat belts are equipped with devices that, when activated, automatically tension the belts. This helps prevent dangerous movement of the driver and passenger in the event of a traffic accident.

Automatic emergency belt tensioners are activated by directional decelerations that occur during a severe frontal collision. At the same time, the front airbags are deployed.

When the device is activated, the seat belt remains in the tensioned position until the buckle tongue is removed from the latch.

Illumination of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) indicator warns the driver of possible malfunctions in the automatic emergency belt tensioner devices. See Section Vehicle Equipment, Location of Instruments and Controls.
