Brake System
Safety Recommendations for Vehicles Equipped with ABS
ABS does not shorten the vehicle's braking distance; it only helps maintain vehicle control during braking. For this reason, always maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead, based on vehicle speed and specific driving conditions.
ABS does not prevent lateral skidding when the vehicle changes direction abruptly. For example, the vehicle may go into a skid when cornering at too high a speed or when jerking the steering wheel while changing lanes. Always maintain a speed that is safe for road surface conditions and driving conditions.
ABS does not prevent loss of directional stability. During emergency braking, avoid sudden jerking of the steering wheel.
The braking distance of a vehicle equipped with ABS may be somewhat longer than that of models with a conventional brake system. This is especially noticeable on loose and uneven road surfaces (gravel, snow). When driving in such conditions, reduce speed and increase the following distance from the vehicle ahead.
ABS Malfunction Indicator Lamp
The anti-lock system includes a self-diagnostic unit. The self-test is noticeable as slight pulsations of the foot brake immediately after the engine starts. The ABS also performs fault diagnosis during every braking application.

If the system detects a malfunction, the corresponding warning lamp illuminates on the instrument panel. Illumination of the warning lamp indicates that the ABS is disabled. In this case, the service brake system remains fully operational, except for the automatic brake force regulation function performed by the ABS. If the ABS warning lamp does not go off after the engine is started or illuminates while driving, contact the nearest service station at the first opportunity.
Simultaneous illumination of the ABS and brake system/parking brake warning lamps also indicates that the brake force regulation function is disabled, which points to a malfunction in both the ABS and the brake system. In this case, the vehicle brake system continues to provide adequate braking; however, avoid pressing the brake pedal forcefully. Contact the nearest service station without delay.
