Ignition Lock

The ignition switch is located on the right side of the steering column. The key can be in one of four positions in the switch:
a) LOCK (0) - locked
b) ACC (I) - accessory power (parking position)
c) ON (II) - ignition on
d) START (III) - engine start
II ON (ignition)
III START (engine start)
"LOCK" (0) position - locked
The key can be inserted into or removed from the switch only in this position. Turning the ignition key from the "LOCK" (0) position to the "ACC" (I) position unlocks the steering column. To turn the key from the "ACC" (I) position to the "LOCK" (0) position, first lightly press the key in to release it in the switch. On models equipped with an automatic transmission, an additional condition for starting the engine is that the shift lever must be in the "P" position.
The steering column locks automatically when an attempt is made to turn the steering wheel after the key has been removed from the ignition switch.
Steering column locking sometimes makes it impossible to turn the key in the ignition switch. In this situation, turn the steering wheel slightly to one side or the other (to relieve the load) while turning the key in the switch.
Never remove the key from the ignition switch while the vehicle is moving! This will inevitably lock the steering column and cause loss of steering control. Remove the key from the switch only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. "ACC" (I) position - accessory (parking)
In this ignition key position, power is supplied to auxiliary electrical consumers (audio system, cigarette lighter, heater blower, windshield wipers, etc.).
"ON" (II) position - ignition on
In this position the ignition key remains in place while the vehicle is being driven and while the engine is running at idle. At the same time, electrical power is supplied to all systems and to any additional equipment installed on the vehicle. When the key is turned from the "ACC" (I) position to the "ON" (II) position, some of the warning lamps on the instrument panel light up briefly to confirm that the corresponding monitoring systems are functioning properly.
On some models, the headlights switch on automatically when the key is turned to the "ON" (II) position (daytime running lights).
"START" (III) position - starting
When the key is turned to this position, the starter motor engages. After the engine starts, release the key and it will automatically return to the "ON" (II) position.
If the vehicle is equipped with an immobilizer system, engine starting will be blocked if the anti-theft system does not identify the key code (see above).
