Towing

~2min read

Ideally, the vehicle should be towed with the drive (front) wheels off the ground (preferably on a flatbed truck). If the vehicle must be towed with the front wheels on the ground, turn the ignition key to the OFF position to prevent damage to the steering lock.

Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission (AT) may be towed forward on all four wheels at speeds not exceeding 55 km/h and for a distance of no more than 80 km (50 miles). Before towing, check the transmission fluid level (see Chapter Maintenance and Tune-up). If the ATF does not reach the HOT mark on the dipstick, make the necessary correction, or tow the vehicle only with the front wheels off the ground. Perform the following preparatory procedures:

a) Release the parking brake;
b) Start the engine;
c) Move the selector lever to D4, then to Neutral (N);
d) Stop the engine;
e) Turn the ignition key to the OFF position (never leave it in the LOCK position).

Never tow a vehicle equipped with an AT in reverse without lifting the front wheels off the ground!

If it is necessary to tow a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with the wheels on the ground, be sure to shift the transmission into neutral and release the parking brake.

When towing a disabled vehicle, use only a tow strap specifically designed for this purpose, which can be purchased inexpensively at almost any automotive accessories store. The strap must be attached only to structural body members, never to the bumper.

Do not forget to turn the ignition key of the towed vehicle to the ON position, otherwise the steering column will inevitably lock. In addition, the turn signals and brake lights are activated when the ignition is on.

Keep in mind that with the engine off, braking efficiency decreases noticeably because the vacuum brake booster does not operate. In this case, apply the brake pedal with somewhat greater force than usual. On models equipped with power steering, greater force must be applied to the steering wheel when maneuvering.

The driver of the towed vehicle should try to keep the tow strap taut at all times to prevent jerking and to avoid the wheels running over the strap.

Before starting, the drivers of both vehicles (towing and towed) should agree on the route.

Drive only at moderate speeds, by the shortest route, and in compliance with traffic regulations. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration, and maneuvering.
