Engine Immobilizer System

~2min read

The key head of models equipped with the engine immobilizer system contains a microchip that disables the anti-theft device immobilizing the engine.

Damage to the microchip may result in loss of the ability to start the engine! Do not allow the keys to overheat, do not leave them for long periods under direct sunlight; try not to drop the keys or place heavy objects on them; avoid exposure to moisture, and carefully wipe a wet key set dry with a soft cloth. No replaceable batteries are provided for the microchip. Never attempt to disassemble the key head yourself!

Engine Immobilizer Device
The standard anti-theft system of some models may include an engine immobilizer device (simply called the immobilizer). The device prevents unauthorized attempts to start the engine and is an effective anti-theft measure that protects the vehicle from thieves.

The engine of a vehicle equipped with an immobilizer can only be started with an ignition key that has a built-in microchip. The microchip contains an encrypted special code, and the anti-theft system deactivates the lock only when it recognizes this code. An attempt to start the engine with any other key or a lock pick disables the engine starting circuit.

When the ignition is turned on (ignition key turned to the "ON" [II] position), the immobilizer indicator lights up for a few seconds, then goes out. A flashing indicator means the system has not recognized the key code. In this case, turn the ignition off (key to the "LOCK" [0] position), remove the key from the switch, then try again.

The system may fail to recognize the key code in the ignition switch if another key with a built-in microchip is nearby. For reliable code recognition, we recommend keeping each key on a separate key ring.

If the system repeatedly fails to recognize the key code, contact a Honda service station.

The immobilizer indicator also flashes when the key is turned in the ignition switch from the "ON" (II) position (ignition on) to the ACC (I) (accessory) or LOCK (0) (steering lock) position.

Do not attempt to modify or add to the immobilizer system. This may disrupt the normal operation of the vehicle's electronic systems and make the vehicle uncontrollable. If a key is lost and the engine cannot be started, contact a Honda service station.
