The SOS Assistant chapter explains how the function works in an emergency. In the event of an accident, the system automatically contacts emergency services via the paired mobile phone. Requirements are an active Bluetooth device and a deployed airbag or a fuel pump shut-off signal.

WARNINGS

Unless the SOS Assistant function is switched on before an accident, the system will not place an emergency call. This could delay the response time and increase the risk of serious or fatal injury.

Do not wait for the SOS Assistant to place an emergency call if you are able to do so yourself. Contact emergency services immediately to avoid delaying the response. If you do not hear the emergency call center within five seconds of the call, the system or the mobile phone may be damaged or not working.

Always place your phone in a secure location in the vehicle so that it does not become a projectile or get damaged in an accident. Failure to follow this advice may result in serious occupant injury or damage to the mobile phone, which could prevent the SOS Assistant from working properly.

For this function to be available, your mobile phone must be Bluetooth-enabled and compatible with the system.

Note: Read the required SOS Assistant information and the SOS Assistant privacy statement in this chapter for important information before you activate the function.

Note: When you switch the SOS Assistant on or off, these settings apply to all paired mobile phones. If you have switched off the SOS Assistant and a previously paired phone connects when the ignition is switched on, a voice message is played and/or a message or symbol appears in the display.

Note: Every mobile phone works differently. Although the SOS Assistant is compatible with most mobile phones, some mobile phones may not work properly with this function.

In the event of a collision in which an airbag has deployed or the fuel pump shut-off has been activated, the system can contact emergency services via 112 (the mobile emergency number that works in most European countries) through a paired and connected mobile phone.

For more information, visit the Ford website for your country.

Note: In an emergency, the SOS Assistant can help you communicate when contacting certain public emergency services. The SOS Assistant function does not carry out rescue operations itself. The local public emergency service carries out specific rescue operations according to the situation.

See Supplemental Restraint System. Important information on airbag deployment is listed in this chapter.

See Emergency Equipment.

Important information on the fuel pump shut-off system is listed in this chapter.

Instructions for switching the SOS Assistant on and off can be found in the description of the settings. See Settings.

Checking that the SOS Assistant is working correctly:

  • The system must have power during the collision as well as when the function is triggered and operating in order to perform correctly.
  • This function must be activated before an accident.
  • You must have a mobile phone that is connected to the system.
  • In some countries, the SIM card must be valid and registered and have credit in order to place and maintain an emergency call.
  • A connected mobile phone must be able to make and maintain outgoing calls during the accident.
  • A connected mobile phone must have adequate network coverage, battery charge and signal strength.
  • The battery power supply of your vehicle must be working.

Note: This function is only available in European countries or regions where the SYNC SOS Assistant can notify the local emergency call center.

For more information, visit the Ford website for your country.

In the event of an accident

Note: Not every collision deploys an airbag or activates the fuel pump shut-off, which may trigger the Emergency Call Assistant. However, if the Emergency Call Assistant is triggered, the system attempts to notify the emergency call center. If a connected mobile phone is damaged or loses its connection to the system, the system searches for and attempts to connect to previously paired mobile phones. The system attempts to dial 112.

Before making a call:

  • If the call was not cancelled and SYNC successfully connects, the introductory message for the emergency call center plays first. The hands-free system then switches to communication between the vehicle occupants and the emergency call center.
  • The system allows a short time window (approx. 10 seconds) to cancel the call. If you do not cancel the call, the system attempts to call 112.
  • The system displays a message to inform you that it is attempting to make an emergency call. You can cancel the call by pressing the corresponding button or the "End Call" button on the steering wheel.

During a call:

  • The Emergency Call Assistant uses the vehicle's GPS or mobile network information, if available, to select the appropriate language.
It then informs the emergency call center about the accident and plays the introductory message. This may include the GPS coordinates of your vehicle.
  • The language selected for communicating with the vehicle occupants may differ from the language the Emergency Call Assistant uses to alert the emergency call center.
  • After the introductory message is sent, the voice line opens so you can speak with the emergency call center through the hands-free system.
  • Once the line is connected, have your name, phone number and location information ready immediately.
  • Note: While the emergency call center is being informed, the system displays a message so you know that important information is being sent. It then informs you when the line for hands-free communication is clear.

Note: During a call with the Emergency Call Assistant, an emergency priority window is displayed that includes the GPS coordinates, if available.

Note: GPS location data may not be available at the time of the collision; in this case, the Emergency Call Assistant still attempts to initiate a call.

Note: The emergency call center may not receive GPS coordinates; in this case, you may be able to speak with the emergency call center through the hands-free system.

Note: The emergency call center may receive information from the mobile network independently of the SYNC Emergency Call Assistant, e.g.

mobile phone number, location of the mobile phone and name of the mobile network operator.

The Emergency Call Assistant may not function if:

    • Your mobile phone or the Emergency Call Assistant hardware was damaged in the collision.
    • The vehicle battery is disconnected or the power supply to the system is interrupted.
    • Your phone was thrown out of the vehicle during a collision.
    • You do not have a valid, registered SIM card with credit in your phone.
    • You are in a European country or region where the SYNC Emergency Call Assistant cannot place a call. For more information, see the Ford website for your country.

Important Information on the Emergency Call Assistant Feature

The Emergency Call Assistant does not call an emergency call center in the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Moldova and Russia.

For more information, visit the Ford website for your country.

Privacy Notice for the Emergency Call Assistant

When the Emergency Call Assistant is enabled, it can inform the emergency call center that the vehicle was involved in a crash in which the airbag deployed or the fuel pump shut-off was activated. This feature can give the emergency call center your location or other details about your vehicle or the collision in order to initiate the most suitable rescue measures.

If you do not want this information shared, do not turn this feature on.

    Safety Information

    WARNING

Distraction while driving can lead to loss of vehicle control, accidents and injuries.

We strongly recommend using these devices and their functions only with extreme caution, so that your attention is not diverted from the road. The safe operation of your vehicle is entirely your responsibility. We advise against using handheld devices while driving and recommend using voice-controlled systems where possible.

Make sure you are informed of all local laws that may affect the use of electronic devices while driving.

    • Never attempt to service or repair the system yourself. Have your vehicle checked by an authorized dealer.
    • Do not use devices if their power cables are brittle, torn or damaged. Route cables and wires so that operation of the pedals and seats, use of storage compartments and safe driving are not impaired.
    • Never leave playback devices in the vehicle under extreme conditions, as this could damage the devices.
For more information, refer to the owner's manuals of the respective devices.
  • For safety reasons, some system functions depend on vehicle speed. These functions can only be used at speeds below 5 km/h. Be sure to read your device's manual before using it with the system.
  • The Emergency Call Assistant in the Ford Mustang (VI Gen, 2014–2023) stands for responsibility and state-of-the-art safety technology. In an emergency, the system automatically connects to emergency services, provided it is enabled and the technical requirements are met. The 2014–2023 Ford Mustang shows how sporty performance and occupant protection work perfectly together.

The system's ability to provide relevant information such as location data and crash reports to enable fast assistance is particularly impressive. The sixth-generation Ford Mustang thus offers a safety feature that goes well beyond the usual.
