Fuel and Exhaust System

Exhaust System

~2min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

On vehicles without a catalytic converter, the exhaust system consists of 3 sections: the front pipe, the center section with resonator, and the rear section with muffler.

On vehicles equipped with a catalytic converter, the exhaust system consists of 4 sections: the same 3 sections plus the catalytic converter section. On some vehicles, two catalytic converters are installed, one of which is attached to the manifold.

The exhaust pipe is suspended along its entire length on rubber mounts; the pipes are connected by flanges.

Removal Each section can be removed independently of the others. The entire system can also be removed at once.

PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands (or drive onto a pit or lift).

Front Pipe

2. On vehicles with a catalytic converter, disconnect the exhaust gas sensor connector. Release the wiring from the clips.

3. Remove the nuts securing the pipe to the manifold and the bolt securing the pipe to the bracket. Disconnect the pipe from the manifold and remove the gaskets.

4. Disconnect the flange joint with the intermediate section and remove the pipe and gasket.

Catalytic Converter (on some vehicles)

5. Remove the two nuts and two bolts securing the inlet pipe flange to the catalytic converter.

6. Remove the two bolts securing the intermediate pipe to the catalytic converter.

7. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the inlet pipe and remove it.

8. Remove the gasket.

Center Pipe

9. On vehicles with a catalytic converter, remove the two bolts securing the intermediate pipe to the catalytic converter and remove the gasket.

10. On vehicles without a catalytic converter, unscrew the two nuts and two bolts, remove the springs and disconnect the center pipe from the front pipe. Remove the gasket.

11. On all vehicles, unscrew the bolt of the rubber mount at the rear of the center pipe.

12. Remove the two bolts securing the intermediate pipe to the muffler tail pipe.

13. Remove the center pipe and gasket.

Rear Muffler Section

14. Unscrew the two bolts securing it to the center pipe.

15. Unhook the straps and remove the section.

Removal of Entire System

16. On vehicles with a catalytic converter, disconnect the exhaust gas sensor connector.

17. Remove the nuts securing the front pipe to the manifold and the bolt securing it to the bracket. Disconnect the pipe from the manifold and remove the gasket.

18. With an assistant, disconnect the system from the rubber mounts and remove it from the vehicle.

Heat Shields

19. Heat shields are installed on some vehicles between the body and the exhaust pipes and are secured with nuts, bolts and clips.

Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Install in the reverse order.

2. Before installation, replace the gaskets and clean the mating surfaces.

3. Check the condition of the mounts and replace if necessary.

4. Make sure there is sufficient clearance between the pipes, the underbody and the suspension components.
