Evaporative Emission Control System
GENERAL INFORMATION
MODELS WITH CARBURETOR ENGINE
Identifying the Charcoal Canister Hose Connections
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If the system is suspected of being faulty, disconnect the hoses from the charcoal canister and the thermal vacuum valve, and blow through them.
2. To check the thermal vacuum valve, which is installed on the right side of the intake manifold, disconnect both hoses from the valve while the engine is cold. Connect a hose to one of the valve ports and blow into it. The valve should be closed and should not allow air to pass. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. Blow into the hose again; the valve should be open and air should pass freely. If the valve does not operate as described above, replace it.
3. The charcoal canister is located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. The charcoal canister and its valves can be checked as follows.
4. Trace hose "A" from the charcoal canister and disconnect it from the tee fitting. Start the engine and try to draw air through the hose; the valve should not allow air to pass, and engine speed should increase slightly. Reconnect the hose to the tee fitting.
5. Trace hose "C" from the charcoal canister and disconnect it from the carburetor float chamber. Start the engine and blow into the hose; the valve should not allow air to pass. Reconnect the hose to the carburetor.
6. Trace hose "B" from the charcoal canister and disconnect it from the intake manifold. With the engine off, blow into the hose and draw air through it; the valve should not allow air to pass in either direction. Reconnect the hose to the intake manifold.
7. If air leakage was found through any of the hoses during the checks in steps 4–6, the charcoal canister and its valves must be replaced.
"PHASE I" MODELS (1993 PRODUCTION MODEL, UP TO JUNE) WITH 2.0 L ENGINE AND MULTIPOINT FUEL INJECTION Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If the system is suspected of being faulty, disconnect the hoses from the charcoal canister located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment, and blow through them.

2. The charcoal canister and its valves can be checked as follows. Disconnect the hoses from the charcoal canister and blow into port "A"; the valve should not allow air to pass. Blow into each port "B" in turn. Both passages should be open and allow air to pass freely. If the checks do not produce the expected results, replace the charcoal canister and its valves.
ALL OTHER MODELS WITH FUEL INJECTION Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If the system is suspected of being faulty, disconnect the hoses from the charcoal canister and the solenoid valve, and blow through them. On models with a 1.6 liter engine, the charcoal canister is located in the left rear corner of the engine compartment, and the solenoid valve is located on the rear side of the intake manifold. On models with a 2.0 liter engine, the charcoal canister is located on the left side of the engine compartment, and the solenoid valve is located on the left or lower side of the intake manifold.

2. The solenoid valve can be checked using the wiring diagram shown.
If necessary, remove the valve following the instructions in subsection 6.4.2.3.3 to improve access.
3. Blow into port "A" and check that air does not pass through it. Blow into port "B" and check that air passes through this port and exits port "C".
4. Through a fuse, connect a 12 volt power source to the solenoid valve as shown in the illustration. After applying voltage, blow into port "A" and check that air passes through the valve and exits port "B". Blow into port "B" and check that air passes through the valve and exits port "C".
5. If the solenoid valve does not operate as expected, it is faulty and must be replaced.
6. The charcoal canister and its valves can be checked as described above.
