Models with Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection
GENERAL INFORMATION
The fuel system consists of the fuel tank mounted under the floor at the rear of the vehicle, an electric fuel pump mounted in the fuel tank, a fuel filter, the fuel supply line and the fuel return line. The fuel pump delivers fuel to the fuel rail, which serves as a reservoir for the four fuel injectors that inject fuel into the intake ports. The fuel filter is installed in the line from the fuel pump to the fuel rail and filters the fuel supplied to the injectors. This section refers to "Phase I" models (produced up to June 1993) and "Phase II" models (produced after June 1993). On vehicles with the 1.6 liter engine (engine code GA16DE), multi-point fuel injection was fitted only on "Phase II" models (produced after June 1993). On vehicles with the 2.0 liter engine, the model ("Phase I" or "Phase II") can be identified by the shape of the intake manifold. On "Phase I" models the throttle body is mounted on the base of the intake manifold, and the manifold rises upward toward the cylinder head; the fuel injectors are located on top of the intake manifold and are easily accessible. On "Phase II" models the throttle body is mounted on top of the intake manifold, and the manifold drops down toward the cylinder head; the fuel injectors are less accessible. Warning Many procedures require removing or disconnecting fuel lines, which may cause fuel leakage. Gasoline is a highly hazardous and volatile liquid and requires particular care when handling.
Residual pressure remains in the fuel lines for a long time after the vehicle has been driven. Before disconnecting any fuel lines, relieve the pressure in the fuel system, referring to subsection 6.3.2.
