Fuel and Exhaust System

Fuel Injection System

~2min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

The vehicles are equipped with the ECCS direct electronic fuel injection system, which also controls ignition timing.

The fuel pump located in the tank supplies fuel at constant pressure through the filter (mounted on the engine compartment bulkhead) to the fuel distributor. The fuel pressure regulator maintains stable fuel pressure at the distributor outlet.

The fuel injection system includes the control unit and the following sensors: – throttle position sensor; – engine coolant temperature sensor; – air flow meter; – crankshaft position sensor; – vehicle speed sensor; – power steering pressure switch; – exhaust gas sensor.

The processor control unit compares incoming information and generates signals that control the injectors, the air-fuel mixture, and ignition timing.

Automatic idle speed control is provided by the idle air bypass valve, which is controlled by the processor control unit.

The throttle body features an automatic idle-up system for a cold engine, controlled by a thermostatic valve. As the engine warms up, the valve's working element expands, moving the valve plunger, which acts on the throttle valve shaft cam and thereby closes the throttle valve.

The injection system also includes a solenoid idle speed compensation valve, which maintains idle speed when engine load increases (for example, when the power steering or air conditioning is switched on). WARNING: On some vehicles this valve is installed but not connected (inactive). On vehicles with catalytic converter, the processor control unit also controls emission control systems.

The control unit has a fail-safe function which, if one of the sensors fails, transfers control to a backup substitute circuit, allowing the vehicle to continue operating, although with reduced performance. In this case, the warning lamp on the instrument panel illuminates, and the fault is coded and stored in the control unit memory.

If the warning lamp illuminates, take the vehicle to a dealer service center. WARNING: The control unit has a self-diagnosis function that allows fault codes to be read automatically.
