Removal

PROCEDURE

Models with 1.6 liter engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the air cleaner cover. Refer to subsection 6.3.2.2.

3. Squeeze the retaining clips and disconnect the connectors from the throttle position sensor, the auxiliary air valve, the air flow sensor and the idle speed up solenoid valve.

4. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle cam. Loosen the locknut and adjusting nut, and remove the cable sheath from the mounting bracket.

5. Note or mark the position of all vacuum and ventilation hoses for correct reconnection during throttle body installation. Then release the retaining clamps (where fitted) and disconnect the hoses from the throttle body.

6. Release the retaining clamps, then disconnect the coolant hoses from both sides of the throttle body and plug the hose openings. Work quickly to minimize coolant loss.

7. Remove the throttle body mounting bolts from the intake manifold and remove the throttle body from the vehicle. Remove the gasket and discard it; use a new gasket during installation. Cover the intake manifold opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt or foreign objects from entering.

Models with 2.0 liter engine

8. Loosen the retaining clamp and disconnect the air intake duct from the throttle body.

9. Disconnect the connector from the throttle position sensor.

10. On "Phase I" models, carefully disconnect the accelerator linkage rod from the ball joint on the throttle body.

11. On "Phase II" models, disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle cam. On models with an automatic transmission, also disconnect the kickdown cable.

12. On all models, release the retaining clamps, disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body and plug the hose openings. Work quickly to minimize coolant loss.

13. On all models, note or mark the position of all vacuum and ventilation hoses for correct reconnection during throttle body installation. Then release the retaining clamps (where fitted) and disconnect the hoses from the throttle body.

14. If necessary, remove the intake manifold mounting bracket to gain access to the throttle body mounting bolts.

15. Remove the throttle body mounting bolts from the intake manifold and remove the throttle body from the vehicle. Remove the gasket and discard it; use a new gasket during installation. Cover the intake manifold opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt or foreign objects from entering.

Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Before installing, make sure the mating surfaces of the throttle body and intake manifold are clean and flat.

2. Install a new gasket on the intake manifold. Install the throttle body on the intake manifold, then tighten all mounting bolts diagonally to the Stage 1 torque specification, then to the Stage 2 torque specification (refer to subsection 6.3.2.1).

3. Make sure all hoses are correctly installed and, if necessary, secure them with retaining clamps.

4. After installation is complete, adjust the accelerator cable. Refer to subsection 6.3.2.

3.

5. On models with an automatic transmission, adjust the kickdown cable. Refer to subsection 9.2.4.
