Fuel and Exhaust System

Fuel system

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

Warning: Refer to the precautions in sub-section 6.3.2 before starting work.

The following operation will release the pressure in the fuel system. Remember that fuel will remain in the system, so observe the necessary precautions when disconnecting system components. Use clean rags, wrapped around the connections, to collect the fuel. Dispose of fuel-soaked rags carefully. Plug or cap open fuel lines to prevent fuel leakage or the entry of dirt into the system.

The fuel system described in this sub-section consists of the fuel pump, mounted in the fuel tank, the fuel filter, the fuel rail and injectors, the pressure regulator, and the metal pipes and flexible hoses connecting these components. All these components contain fuel under pressure when the engine is running and/or when the ignition is switched off. Pressure remains in the system for some time after the ignition is switched off, and it must be released before removing any system components.

Releasing Fuel Pressure

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the vehicle fuse box. The fuses are not numbered, but their function can be identified from the table on the fuse box cover and from the wiring diagrams at the end of this manual.

2. Start the engine and wait until it stalls by itself.

3. Try to start the engine a couple more times to release all residual pressure from the system.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

5. For safety, do not install the fuel pump fuse until all work on the fuel system is complete. If you install the fuse now, do not turn the ignition on until the work is finished.
