Evaporative Emission Control System
CARBURETOR ENGINES Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the hoses from the canister and the thermal vacuum valve (TVV) and blow through them.
2. The TVV is screwed into the right side of the intake manifold. On a cold engine, disconnect both hoses from the TVV. Blow through the TVV by connecting an auxiliary hose to the fittings. Air should pass through the TVV only on a warm engine.

3. The canister is mounted in the rear left part of the engine compartment.
4. Disconnect hose A from the tee side. With the engine running, apply vacuum to the hose – engine speed should increase slightly and there should be no leaks in the hose. Reconnect the hose.
5. Disconnect hose C from the carburetor and blow through it with the engine running – there should be no leaks. Reconnect the hose.
6. Air cleaner connection. Disconnect hose B from the manifold, blow through the hose and apply vacuum to the hose with the engine off – there should be no leaks. Reconnect the hose.
7. If checks 4–6 give a negative result, replace the canister.
FUEL INJECTION ENGINES Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect all hoses from the canister and the solenoid valve and blow through them. The canister is mounted in the rear left part of the engine compartment. The valve is screwed into the rear part of the intake manifold.

2. To inspect the canister, disconnect the hoses and blow into fitting A – air should not pass through. Air should pass freely through fittings B. Otherwise, replace the canister.
3. To inspect, remove the solenoid valve.

4. Air should pass freely only through fittings A and C on the de-energized valve. If voltage is applied to the valve, air should pass only through fittings A and B.
5. If the inspection results are negative, replace the valve.
CANISTER WITH ABSORBER

Canister with absorber on fuel injection engines
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Mark the routing of each hose and the order of hose connections to the canister.
2. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hoses.
3. Remove the canister from the bracket.
4. Install the canister in the reverse order.
THERMAL VACUUM VALVE (TVV)

Thermal vacuum valve (carburetor engines)
The TVV (indicated by arrow) is screwed into the intake manifold. Replacement. Work is performed on a cold engine.
PROCEDURE
1. Drain the coolant to the valve level, or prepare a plug.
2. Disconnect the hoses from the TVV.
3. Carefully unscrew the TVV from the manifold and remove the gasket.
4. Install the TVV in the reverse order. Replace the gasket.
SOLENOID VALVE Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the air duct.
2. Disconnect the battery ground, and disconnect the connector from the valve.
3. Mark the order of hose connections on the valve.
4. Loosen the clamps, disconnect the hoses and remove the valve.
5. Install the valve in the reverse order.
